Expressions In Memory of Nigel Holton

To A Special Person:

“I had the good fortune to get to know Nigel when I recently played flute with him, but I had no idea that it would be his last performance.  We played “Happiness Within” and for me it was indeed a mystical experience as he played the piano.

I felt he gave out the richness of his heart as we merged in the music. I bid you goodbye Nigel.  May you go well on your way and may you share music now with the Angels Above!

With our love,
Antonis and Dina Theodoropoulos”

“I didn't know Nigel personally, (I have and continue to enjoy his music CDs from EverSound) but it seems he got to be here with his heart.  I think maybe the best way to honor another heartfelt person is just to continue to honor the heart in all past and present masters, students, and human beings.  We are all extremely blessed to be here for this short time we are given.  He was a most blessed human being.

With grateful sympathy to a fellow heartfelt being ~

Sincerely,
Janice Wilson”

“Given Nigel's battle with cancer, it was a delightful surprise to bump into him recently. He looked so well, all of which makes this tragedy that much harder to take in. Nigel was a kind soul with exquisite talents.”
- Tim Hain, musician and friend.

“I got to know Nigel way before I met him in person, through his music. It was around twenty years ago and, at that time, I was living in Spain.  I heard his music on some videos and I fell in love with it, especially the piece entitled "Above The Clouds.”  I was working for a record company, but I did not really like the music we were releasing and my dream was, that one day, I would be involved with this very special music.

Dreams do come true and in 1998 I had the opportunity to meet him and other artists interested in starting a record label. Soon after that, Nigel released his first album "Above the Clouds" and, last year, he followed it up with "This Journey". He also produced wonderful pieces which were used in different collections.

Although my main association with Nigel was through music, we had some personal and meaningful interactions every now and then.  He was truly a kind, compassionate, sweet, innocent and good-hearted person.

Last year when he was hospitalized with a broken leg and bone cancer, we lived some intense and dramatic moments together. He realized how serious his condition was and understood his life would dramatically change from that point onwards. He was extremely brave and determined to trust and to fight, which he did wonderfully.

Slowly but surely, he was recovering and managing to get back to a normal life.   Just before he left for New Zealand, Nigel came to meet with me and I do not remember having seen him so happy ever before! He was so much looking forward to this trip. It’s hard to believe it was going to be his last one… but in my heart I feel he is now on a new journey and I am proud to join in the celebration of his beautiful life and his delightful music legacy.

"He has left us all too soon, but two all-important things he has left with us forever: his love and his music."

- Javier Sanz, label representative and friend

“Nigel was my dear friend for a great many years.  He and I once went on a journey together, to Lake Tahoe, and then on to Yosemite-- it was the first and only visit I've had to Yosemite, and Nigel and i had such a wonderful, wonderful time.  We enjoyed the beauty of the surrounds, and laughed the entire time.  The car he had at that time was his Rabbit, it think it was called- and the radiator was giving us trouble - so that we had to constantly stop, to put more water in it- practically all the way from Yosemite to Pasadena-- but we just kept laughing no matter what.  That is what I will always remember, his light heart, and shinning smile- in the face of everything,

With love and care,”

“I first met Nigel in 1974 when he came to play with the London band Salutations. In the first 4 years of our association we shared three different houses in London.  As a friend, roommate and confidant in those difficult years he was sympathetic to a fault yet always fair in his appraisal of others.

We became good friends, both of us being soppy old Cancers. In all the years I've known him; throughout long trying rehearsals I never, ever recall him being bad natured or aggressive. He was one of the most loving, even-tempered people  I've ever known. In the late seventies we were both avid reader of Carlos Castaneda's Don Juan books and there was a phrase from one I remember had struck a chord with Nige ...... IMPECCABILITY! He was always concerned with striving for excellence as a person and musician. I've never met anyone with a bad word to say about Nige ... everybody loved him and it was easy to see why. Blessed with a luminous, open, totally disarming smile he made everyone feel like he was their friend ...... and he was.! His heart was pure as snow and his words were always thoughtful and kind.

I was blessed to be able to tell him how much I love him recently. I was a little profuse ....knowing he was still fighting cancer.... and although I embarrassed him somewhat he was touched. The following incident illustrates perfectly the serendipity which brought him into my life over the years; At the Koala Center in Brisbane, to my surprise and delight, he literally walked into camera shot as I was filming the koalas. My wife Liz and I had lunch with him and Katherine, before they left for Fiji.

It was a magical meeting. One of many over the years. For over thirty years he's been sailing in and out of my life like a butterfly .. my wife, Liz, got to know and love him over the last 17 years .....those fun dinners after an event as we went Dutch on the checks......... the times we played together ... it's all something that I will treasure in my heart.  An angel walked amongst us, innocent as a babe and totally without guile. His love lives on brightly in all our lives.”

“We are so sorry to hear of Nigel's passing, yet feel that his life continues in many ways, even in the absence of his physical presence.  I first met Nigel in the late 70's when he was staying in Pasadena, at an open house there.  After running in to him over the years - when he was always very gracious even though he didn't really know me well - we finally had the opportunity to work together when Rich Neel recorded a song at Nigel's home studio.  Rich had asked me to play keyboards on this song, and Nigel was again very gracious, offering to let me use his keyboards, but I declined that offer due to my unfamiliarity with the synths he had there.

After the session we noticed a French horn case over in the corner, and Nigel told us he was brushing up to participate in an orchestral rehearsal of some sort, and I was so glad to hear about that.  I have worked as a professional pianist for most of my adult life, composing for jazz and new music ensembles, and recording some smooth jazz.  I have felt a lack of opportunities for musician friends to collaborate on instrumental projects.  Nigel gave me hope that this is always still a possibility, although, sadly, now, without his active participation.

Please accept our sincere gratitude for doing what you do there at EverSound.

Thank you,
Tom & Gala Gastineau”

“Nigel Holton was a very wonderful man. Even though my wife and I live in North Carolina, being a fellow EverSound artist, I fortunately had many opportunities to be around him. The last time EverSound had a showcase, on our days off, we spent time together mostly hiking for hours and hours and reflecting on the beauty of life. Nigel loved life and nature and his music was a testament of that. Nigel was a wonderful composer and I don't say that lightly.  His music exuded deep beauty, wonderful meaning and the colors of a musical rainbow. The world of music has suffered a great loss. Nigel was a sweet man and he possessed a kind and brilliant soul.”

- Ron Clearfield, musician and friend.

In memory of the gentle and joyful human being who was Nigel.

I met Nigel in early 1978, when we shared a house with others, in South London.  It was only for a brief period that I spent time with him, but I can still recall the laughter, that thoroughly cheeky and disarming grin and the absolute warmth of the man.
There were 20 odd people living in our house.  We would take it in turns to cook dinner in pairs.  My cooking partner was Nigel and he taught me a lot about healthy eating.

Once, we took the train from London to Paris and then hitch hiked together from Paris to Marbella in Spain.   It was a journey that eventually took us 3 days.  Although it was April, we traveled through a snow blizzard and then beautiful spring fields of southern France.  Nigel was a delightful and caring travel companion. When we reached Orange in the south of France, we could get no further by road and so took a train.  We thought it would take 12 hours, in fact it took 24 hours.  There was no food or drink on the train and we slept in the luggage rack.  We laughed a lot though and had such fun.
One moment stands out – Nigel’s room was in the basement of the house where we lived, not a big room and most of it was taken up with a piano.  I had the sheet music for a favourite classic of mine – “The Way You Look To-night” and gave it to Nigel.  I will not ever forget him singing and playing it so beautifully.  It moved me to tears.
The night that Nigel told me he was leaving to live in America, was a sad time.  He needed to spread his wings and to develop into the brilliantly talented and accomplished musician he became.  Even though I only saw Nigel on a handful of occasions after he left, the exchanges were always warm and friendly.  He had a big heart and I always remained fond of him.

Nigel was a truly special soul.  I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing, too soon.  We are indeed fortunate that Nigel’s warmth and his music will live on in our hearts and our lives for always.

My love and thoughts go to Nigel’s partner and to his family.

Dear Nigel, you touched my heart and my life was richer for knowing you.

Nov. 19, 2006

Dear family, friends and loved ones of Nigel,
I am a former journalist who had the honor of reviewing Nigel’s first CD, “Above the Clouds.”  That CD is still one of my favorites.  Although I wasn’t extremely close with Nigel, he was my piano teacher in Miami for a short spell, and my family and I spent quite a few New Year’s Eves with Nigel and Katherine as well. Nigel and I were both notoriously late, although he was worse, trying to cram too many parties into the evening.

At Nigel’s memorial service, my 3 year old son asked me, “Who’s that man in the picture, Mommy?” I answered, “That’s Nigel, and all these people are here today to celebrate his life.” He responded, “Nigel?  Oh yeah, Nigel, that’s right.”  I asked him if he remembered Nigel from  the New Year’s Eve parties, but he fell silent, as if in deep thought.  Shortly after this conversation, in speaking to my husband (whose native language is Arabic), he began referring to Nigel as “Naji” which means “rescued” in Arabic.

Along that line, of all the deaths that have crossed my awareness, I feel the most comforted (and even joyful if that’s OK to say) with Nigel’s  as I recalled the story of my grandmother’s near drowning in the ocean.  My grandma had heard that when you go down for the third time you don’t come up again, just as I heard was the case with Nigel, who made it over two big waves but not the third.  In my grandma’s case, she gave up after being sucked down three times, thinking there was no hope.  As soon as she “let go,” her head filled with the most beautiful light, and she heard the most delightful music.  Just then, a lifeguard swam by.  She grabbed his leg and hung on to him for dear life.  He rescued her.  Although she was extremely careful later in life to protect her children from the ocean, she never forgot the out-of-this-world light and music she experienced and said she’d never be afraid to die by drowning.

Somehow I just knew that Nigel had experienced something similar, didn’t suffer, or feel terribly scared.  How fitting that my son called him “Nagi” as I feel that Nigel was truly rescued from suffering.  And how fitting that he would pass listening to the most comforting music!  That “knowing” gave me peace with Nigel's death and allowed me to simply feel joy and love.

Respectfully with warm love,
Ginny McCrum-Bendaoud
